Preparing Your Pet for an Ultrasound

Similar to an ultrasound performed on you or I, an ultrasound on your pet is usually a comfortable, non-invasive and simple diagnostic test requiring minimal preparation. Like most procedures, it is important to not feed your pet any food after midnight the night before, and no water after 7:00am on the morning of the ultrasound.

Unless your pet requires an emergency ultrasound, all pets scheduled for an ultrasound will be admitted to the hospital between 7:15am and 8:30am Monday - Friday by appointment. Ultrasounds can be usually be performed as an outpatient service, and most pets do not require an overnight stay for the ultrasound testing alone.

To ensure an accurate image, please be aware that your pet's hair will be shaved at the site of the area we are assessing. Most pets are gently and comfortably held by our caring team members during the procedure and do not require sedation.

While the ultrasound itself only takes about an hour, your pet will be scheduled for a specific discharge time to allow the veterinarian adequate time to assess the results and review the findings with both you (and your primary veterinarian) if applicable. You will have ample opportunity to ask any questions during this time as well.

Rest assured that like all procedures at our hospital, our Healthcare team will ensure and uphold the highest levels of safety, comfort and caring for your best friend.
